Navionics has already popularized navigation apps for smartphones.
The Italian company continues to develop its charting software with the introduction of an Android version of Dock-to-Dock Autorouting at boot Düsseldorf 2017. The program already worked on iPhones, iPads and select chartplotters.
Simply punch in your destination and Dock-to-Dock guides you along a safe course. It calculates a detailed route, taking into account chart data, navigation aids, water depth and tides. The plot even highlights shallows, bridges, busy shipping lanes and other potential dangers along the way.
Estimated fuel consumption, distance and ETA are also shown. Autorouting can be edited wherever your local knowledge includes shortcuts or recent hazards not yet on the charts. Points of Interest (POI) near the destination appear automatically in the Autorouting menu, complete with phone numbers. However, the company strongly cautions against total reliance on the software. Sensible skippers will use it as a guide only.
