Raymarine develops new Quantum radar

FLIR Systems Inc. has announced the Raymarine Quantum CHIRP radar, a new compact solid state radar which features CHIRP pulse compression technology.

The new technology uses multiple compressed radar pulses with FLIR’s ATX advanced target separation technology to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks, buoys and weather cells as close as 18ft. It is claimed that the resolution and separation quality is superior to that of traditional magnetron radars.

Grégoire Outters, vice president and general manager of FLIR’s maritime segment said: “This breakthrough technology coupled with our ATX advanced target separation technology will change the game in terms of performance, ease of use and connectivity.”

The Quantum weighs 5.4kg, 50% less than traditional magnetron radars. It has WI-FI networking to Raymarine MFDs which eliminates the need for additional cabling or interface boxes.

Other benefits are said to include rain and sea clutter elimination, interference-blocking from other radars and a noise-free, easy-to-interpret image.

The Quantum will be available in the first quarter of 2016.
