Continuum

UK, Shrewsbury. Continuum is the latest 42m motoryacht concept to come from Andrew Trujillo Design in collaboration with Adam Younger.

“This is probably my most conventional project for a very long time,” says Andrew Trujillo. “I thought it would be interesting to do something that doesn’t come across too alien to people. It is rather conservative but it is a fast 42m flybridge motoryacht.”

Continuum features a comparatively conventional layout that can accommodate six to eight guests across two to three cabins on the lower deck, with crew quarters situated forward of the deck. The master en suite is located forward on the main deck towards the bow and includes a walk-in wardrobe and large skylight. Aft of this is the raised pilothouse and galley, which connects to the main salon and a formal dining area.

Above the main deck is an open sundeck with a bimini that can be deployed to provide protection from the sun. “It seems that so many yachts have deck upon deck, making them look a little top heavy in my view,” says Trujillo. “I sought to return to the original principle of a fast motoryacht—I wanted to make something dynamic, and her lines emphasise her length and add a sense of speed and adventure.”

To be built from composite, with the option of using a light-weight alloy, Continuum includes features such as the aft mounted communication/radar masts—providing a visual balance to the wedge shape—along with an enclosed anchor pocket. The latter solution allows the hull to retain clean lines while improving hydrodynamics.

The deep bow with fluted spray rails give good sea keeping and handling, while a long and gentle waterline ensures good acceleration and overall efficiency. "The hull has two transverse tapered steps, combined with multiple spray rails," says Trujillo. "The geometry of these being key to getting hydrodynamic performance combined with dynamic stability." This feature has also been configured to work with jet drives and improve the efficiency of the units.

Continuum is powered by three MTU 16-cylinder diesel engines, producing 2,237kW each. These are connected to triple water jets, resulting in a top speed of 50-plus knots.
