SuperYacht iQ: Where do superyacht owners come from?

As everybody in the industry knows, superyacht ownership has always been shrouded in a closely knitted veil of secrecy. Regardless, discourse regarding superyachts seen in the international media and from the general public is often focused on just this. Within the business itself, however, it is simply not the done thing to discuss the matter of ownership, particularly when the owner or involved parties have expressed the importance of privacy.

In light of this, in the new SuperYacht iQ 2016 Market Report, we do not discuss individual owners, but strive to offer accurate information about superyacht owners as a whole that builders, designers, and brokers can effectively utilise to target particular markets and better facilitate the needs of culturally different clients.

There is no lack of information on the state of the market floating around the industry, often mentioning the specific regions from which owners originate. What is lacking, however, is real facts and figures, checked and verified, over the full spectrum of the market. In our Market Report, we have analysed the ownership of yachts over 40 metres. Whilst the task of acquiring accurate information of these owners is particularly difficult, we were able to precisely identify the nationalities of approximately 90% of the yachts over 40 metres.

Just some of the statistics we have verified include:

- Between 2011 and 2015, 15% of the new 40+ metre yachts were delivered to clients from the USA. Today 20% of the 40+ metre order book is being built for clients from the USA.

- 5% of the superyachts larger than 40 metres in the global superyacht fleet are owned by UK owners.

- 12% of the sailing yachts larger than 40 metres are owned by German owners.
