Sustainability in the Marine Industry

Following the inaugural and highly successful Future of Yacht Recycling Conference staged by Quaynote Communications and YachtMedia on the day before the METSTRADE Show kicked off last November, the organisers have announced a second edition with an expanded environmental theme.

The event will not only revisit the dismantling and responsible recycling of leisure craft, but also engage in debate about whether the Boating Industry can effectively embrace the ‘Circular Economy’ and how it can interact with the environmental desirability of ocean and waterway conservation.

Fully supported by METSTRADE and with technical cooperation from ICOMIA, the event will fit conveniently into the travel planning for anyone attending the METSTRADE event in the Netherlands. Starting at 11.00 am on the day before the big show opens its doors, there will be a registration / talk-shop period from 8.30 onwards, where visitors arriving early will be able to take a coffee, chat to various experts about the subject matters, and share experiences with like minded colleagues.

ICOMIA Secretary General Udo Kleinitz, who very ably chaired the 2015 edition, will again preside over the day’s proceedings, and individual segments of the agenda will be moderated by Chairmen from the Confederation’s Technical, Environment and Marinas Working Groups.

Peter Franklin speaking for the joint organisers said, “Last year’s Yacht Recycling Conference was very well attended and kick started fruitful discussions about how to deal with End-of-Life Boats, bringing together many businesses and organisations with a professional interest in the subject and its environmental implications. The feedback we received from delegates and participants afterwards indicated that they would very much welcome the opportunity to review the key topics again in 12 months time, in order to monitor progress, cross-fertilise latest ideas, and to plot where the boating industry stands with regard to any forthcoming regulatory interventions.”

“But, actually we have recognised that we are not only working for the sustainability of the marine industry, but also for the cleanliness and biodiversity of our seas and waterways” Franklin added. “So we also plan to dedicate part of the program this year to the concept of ocean conservation, and how to encourage our industry and its customers to be actively involved in responsibly sustaining the very environment that supports its being.”

“Irene Dros, Maritime Domain Manager at METSTRADE commented, “we are dedicated to continuing our commitment to environmental sustainability in all aspects of our show, and are therefore delighted to host another forum that focuses on sustainability in our industry. We also believe that widening out the discussion to embrace the ‘clean seas narrative’ can only help to increase the focus on dealing with End-of-Life or End-of-Use Boats.”

IBI News who took a keen interest in last year’s event and organised a debate on the subject matter in the METSRADE Innovation Lab afterwards, have been confirmed as Media Partners for the 2nd edition.
