Hybrid Superyachts: A Sustainable Buzz?
Hybrid superyachts are still rare, but serious builders are banking on growth
Combined diesel-electric propulsion is available for both luxury sail and power craft. Some of the latter feature azimuth thrusters, while sailing vessels may use traditional shaft drive, which can also charge the batteries when not motoring. These systems can reduce fuel costs and environmental impact, responding to calls for sustainability. Less onboard noise is another plus. But current installations require more space, and some potential clients are reluctant to plunge into the unfamiliar. Builders stress the reliability of their new systems, with the latest versions including engine heat recovery and sophisticated power management technology.
