Making the Safe Choices

High-tech safety devices are taking to the seas in the form of new communications and navigation systems

Certain types of safety gear are mandated by the International Maritime Organization, depending on vessel type, size and flag. Modern life jackets are lighter and more comfortable to wear than older models. Some inflate automatically, while others are equipped with flashing lights, EPIRBs or personal locator beacons. Bluewater sailors can now carry a personal AIS device, and new man-overboard systems send a wireless alert if someone falls into the sea. In addition, there are liferafts made from lighter materials, more compact and easier to handle.
