Next Generation Connectivity at Sea

The Signal K project claims to be sailing to the rescue of data exchange at sea, currently adrift in older, closed NMEA protocols incapable of handling today's multiple onboard and shoreside devices and the hyper-connectivity of the Internet of Things

Its open platform supports communication not only among the increasingly sophisticated instruments found on modern vessels, but also data exchange among boats and between boats and shore installations, including marinas, bridges and aids to navigation. Such “smart boating” includes the ability to monitor onboard systems via cellphone, computer or tablet. The new open source approach should generate a proliferation of applications, further expanding options.
