Going Green Pushes ROV Technology to the Fore
Using drones for port and ship inspections, both above and below the surface, can save money, help protect the environment and keep divers out of dangerous situations
New, highly-maneuverable units have cameras designed for extremely low-light conditions. They can even be guided by sonar where visibility is null. ROVs employing water jets for hull cleaning can remove and collect a high percentage of biofouling elements to comply with IMO regulations. This eliminates potentially invasive species while reducing damage to antifouling paint. Clean hulls consume less fuel while steaming, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and cutting expenditures for ship operators.
