Sanmar order follows concept announcement

News from Turkish tug builder Sanmar includes deliveries and an order for the first of a new design within just a few weeks of the announcement of the new model joining the Sanmar, Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) portfolio.

Just last month this column reported the unveiling of a new design from RAL, the TRAktor Z-2500SX to be built exclusively at Sanmar Shipyards. The first order for this compact, under 24m length rule tractor tug has now been signed between Sanmar and Port Taranaki on the west coast of New Zealand. The new design, to be known as the Delicay series will have a guaranteed bollard pull of 60t from Caterpillar main engines and forward-mounted Rolls-Royce Z-drives.

Staff from Port Taranaki visited yards in China, Singapore and Turkey before selecting the TRAktor Z-2500SX, ordering a standard design with limited modifications.

First of two deliveries to report also involves first examples of a new design. In the drive to control operation and maintenance costs, Sanmar contracted RAL to design a ‘little-sister’ to its successful Boğaҫay class resulting in the compact but powerful 22m design designated RAmparts 2200 by RAL and the Sirapinar class by Sanmar.

A Sanmar delivery crew has now delivered vessel number one (the first of three) named Sirapinar to Dubai for owners Drydocks World. The tug has a LOA of 22.4m, beam 10.85m and draught 4.67m and is built to RINA class. Power is provided by two Caterpillar 3512C main engines each developing 1,380kW at 1,600rpm turning Schottel SRP 1012 fixed-pitch azimuthing Rudderpropellers each with 2,100mmm diameter propellers. The port main engine powers a single FFS pump feeding a 1,200m3/hr monitor, Caterpillar also supplying two 86ekW C4.4 gensets. On trials Sirapinar achieved a bollard pull of 46.9t ahead, 44.8t astern and speed 12.2kn, Sanmar state that more powerful propulsion options can provide up to 60tbp.

Svitzer is now a regular customer for Sanmar built, RAL designed tugs and Svitzer Americas recently took delivery of Svitzer Monte Christi and Svitzer Catuan for operation in the Dominican Republic. The RAmparts 2400SX tugs are each powered by two Caterpillar 3516C main engines developing 4,200kW in total, driving Rolls-Royce US 255 FP thrusters with carbon shafts turning 2,600mm diameter propellers in high-efficiency nozzles. Two Caterpillar C4.4 86ekW gensets are included and performance figures include 70tbp and speed 13kn. Towing is over the bow via a DMT winch.

The last two years have seen Svitzer commit to twelve RAL/Sanmar tugs. In addition to the above, two have been delivered to Svitzer Americas and Svitzer Euromed, six RAstar 2800-E terminal class tugs are in build, designated the ‘Silver Bullet’ project and a further slightly more powerful pair of the same class are destined for use at the Ichthys LNG project offshore Western Australia.
