The Jute Fiber Dreamboat

Tara Tari, a sailboat built in Bangladesh using jute fiber instead of fiberglass in the hull, demonstrates how environmental concerns can drive innovation

Project originator Corentin de Chatelperron sailed his vessel all the way to France with no problems. He thinks natural fibers found around the world and traditionally used for a variety of purposes can be adapted to new applications. Using today's biosourced resins would further reduce the environmental impact of many products, from swimming pools to car parts. Flax fiber has been used in a French boat, and Chatelperron is currently in Madagascar to explore the potential of sisal for local, low-tech construction.
