Philippe Briand unveils new 30m concept ‘Egoist’

Philippe Briand unveils 30m sailing yacht concept, designed purely to satisfy the needs and enjoyments of the owner…

In today’s competitive marketplace, it appears that most yachts are designed to meet a certain criterion such as, being the optimum charter yacht or offering adaptable design options. But the question is, ‘does the quest for the most attractive or practical sailing yacht eventually dilute the design?’

Philippe Briand and team seem to think so, and suggest that the essence of why a yacht is being built can quite easily be lost when trying to cater for the demands of the modern sailing yacht market. But 30m sailing yacht concept Egoist doesn’t fall into this category, having been designed purely to satisfy the needs and enjoyments of the owner.

Perhaps one of the most prominent features of the yacht is its simplicity. The main salon is almost completely sunken into the hull, as to not interrupt the profile of the yacht. S/Y Egoist embodies a take on a classic Eastern Seaboard sailing yacht, which can also be used to race with a reduced, expert crew.

Although one would think that the volume of the yacht had been reduced to create the yacht’s simplistic appearance, her arrangement shows that there is ample space in the main salon and accommodation for two crewmembers. Egoist has been designed as a day sailor or a cruising yacht, for an owner who wants to enjoy sailing without the need for many crew.

The yacht has been designed “to be a pleasure for the owner,” says Philippe Briand. “It’s not to bow to the demands or tastes of anyone else. The concept of Egoist is to become an owner’s self-indulgent fantasy; it should be the yacht that they have always dreamed of owning.”

Briand developed the naval architecture of Egoist for ‘extremely fast and responsive’ performance. Although the studio has used the timeless lines which it is famous for, there is certainly a contemporary twist to this design.

The team is currently working on three bespoke yachts ranging from 55 to 90m in length.
