The musical concept

FRANCE, Aix-en-Provence. Stradivarius is a 120m motoryacht concept and the latest to come from the drawing board of McDiarmid Yacht & Design. The concept marks the studio’s second anniversary and was inspired by a visit to The Venice Music Museum in Venice, Italy.

“We looked at the stringed instruments on display from harps to cellos, double bases, violins and violas produced throughout the ages,” explains principal designer Alex McDiarmid. “We began to carefully inspect each element of the instruments design, noting it's technical geometry which has not really changed in over 450 years. Look carefully and you will see that these instruments share similar geometry and construction principles with yacht design.”

Named after the stringed instruments constructed by members of the Stradivari (Stradivarius) family, the 120m concept is based on the body of a violin. Drawing inspiration from the profile of the instrument, the team has created a superyacht capable of accommodating 16 guests across eight en suite cabins. The interior makes the most of the 20m beam and includes quarters on the lower deck for its 30 crew, however, additional details on the interior have yet to be released.

The steel and aluminium structure will be fitted with Volvo Penta D16 MG gensets and Valence batteries, and connected to pod drives.

“In case you were wondering, a violin has excellent sea keeping qualities and floats very well if placed in water,” says McDiarmid. “Could yacht building learn anything from violin making in terms of evolution or revolution? Time will tell.”
