MYD presents Classic

McPherson Yacht Design (MYD) is a small, dynamic design studio based in Ripley, UK, founded in 1995 by Robert McPherson. Initially set up to provide design support to a variety of well-known yacht designers, McPherson has decided to step into the limelight with his 116m Classic.

“We have several proposals in the pipeline, the first one being this classically styled 116m vessel,” explains McPherson. “Another is a 100m-plus yacht in collaboration with a major shipyard and renown naval architect. Details of this proposal are still under wraps but it has more of a contemporary style than the 116m Classic.”

Inspired by the style of classic gentleman’s yachts of the 1930s, McPherson has attempted to capture the simple yet graceful curves of these older vessels and combine them with contemporary ideas. An example of this approach is in the concealed anchor system at the bow to ensure a smooth finish along the hull. The superstructure embraces traditional sized windows in the aluminium structure forward, while the aft section features large windows set in high-gloss mahogany cladding. This distinct division enables the incorporation of traditional styling, while allowing plenty of natural light to penetrate social areas and offering views out thanks to low bulwarks.

Accommodation is provided for 18 guests across six double en suite cabins, two VIP suites and a master suite for the owner. “The owner’s suite is located aft on the bridge deck,” says McPherson. “This layout provides the best possible views for the owner while also creating an extensive private deck space for relaxation.”

The concept provides ample deck space aft on the main and upper decks, which are protected by retractable awnings. These are split into sections, giving the owner and guests a variety of shade configurations. The aft section on the bridge deck provides a seating area and Jacuzzi, which connects to the deck below via a staircase aft. The upper deck includes a large outdoor lounge area, bar and Jacuzzi. Towards the stern on the main deck is a spiral staircase that leads down into an open courtyard adjoining the nightclub/dance hall area, which is directly connected to the main salon and dining area. However, this space could be reconfigured to allow for a touch-and-go helicopter platform.

Other features of the design include a cinema, library, spa and a tender garage that extends the beach club when not in use on the lower aft deck. The steel and aluminium vessel will achieve a maximum speed of 17 knots and benefits from a 16.6m beam.
