Hipp Yacht

Tristan Hipps, featured in Q5, is a young design student attending his fourth year at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan.

Majoring in transportation design, he expects to graduate in the spring of 2011 and seek a career in yacht design. Although not necessarily realisable or even practical, as an exercise in form and volume, his Ladislaus 95m concept reveals a startling eye for detail. Here we see more renders of the concept.

When designing Ladislaus, I wanted to push beyond industry norms and truly change the way the market views superyacht design in terms of styling and functionality. I have become captivated by the freedom yacht design offers, as I don’t feel constrained by the seemingly ever-changing regulations and safety features of the automotive world.

A combination of dramatic proportions and angles with subtle curves lends the exterior profile visual impact. Another goal was to both emotionally and literally reconnect passengers with the true beauty of yachting and its association with the sea. I have tried to eliminate what I refer to as the ‘layered design formula’, or the wedding cake look, by blending multiple levels of the yacht to create a single graphic. This provides more of a cohesive and finished feel.

I utilised a straight stem because of its overall robust presence. Long arching curves extend aft from the bow creating a bold shoulder line, which offers privacy and wind protection for the owner’s private deck. The master stateroom overlooks this expansive deck with its infinity pool, catwalk and helideck. Up top the sun deck also has its own infinity pool and a completely uninterrupted panoramic view of the sea itself. Two stories of reinforced polycarbonate windows tower over the stern to emphasise the sheer scale of the yacht. Staircases span from the stern all the way up to the stateroom’s private deck. Finally, large open areas reveal the recessed, transparent exterior walls of the staterooms and a walkway just off the waterline. Guests will not be limited to moving inside the yacht, but will have accessibility to the walkways and stairs all around the exterior, furthering the interactive experience with their surroundings.
