Aurora

At the beginning of June, SYD reported on a new concept called Ra by Adam Voorhees, who has taken his award winning 66m concept a step further. In collaboration with Lürssen, the new 91m Aurora project will be presented at the 2010 Monaco Yacht Show in September.

The project, based upon Lürssen’s proven platform, has unique hexagonal graphic detailing with references to traditional Islamic patterns, which helps to filter light into the interior and in turn provides more privacy. “Aurora is an exploration of new ideas for multifunctional spaces, interior and exterior living, and an innovative form language: the exemplary expression of the yachting lifestyle”, explains Voorhees. “Aurora represents a more sophisticated approach to the connection between inside and out, as both the living spaces and exterior design are interdependent elements that create a unified experience.”

The main deck is a multifunctional area, with the aft deck connecting directly to a fluid and modular grand lounge surrounded by full height glazing and includes an infinity pool. Another lounge area is found on the aft upper deck, cantilevered over the deck below, which provides a sheltered area against the elements to users, with a spa located on the foredeck abaft the helipad.

The interior has a theatre/game room and library on the main deck with a gym and sauna on the lower deck next to a fold down beach platform, aft of the tender garages. The design includes four double and two VIP guest suites on the upper deck, each with fold out balconies, and an entire level has been dedicated to the owner.

The displacement superyacht would be constructed from steel and aluminium, adhering to MCA and RINA Green Star classifications, achieving a maximum speed of 18 knots and a range of 6,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 16 knots. Another feature of the design is the inclusion of photovoltaics to provide a green power source for hotel loads. “An adaptable canopy on the sky deck can track the angle of the sun to increase the efficiency of the photovoltaics while providing optimum shade from the sun”, continues Vooheers. “Aurora utilises the latest in hybrid propulsion systems and specific design solutions, technical equipment, and materials to maintain a very low impact on the environment.”
