McDiarmid Design has revealed a new 90m concept, with four rather peculiar exterior styling options, inspired by conchology, the scientific study of shells

“The design and styling of the superstructure takes its inspiration from the beautiful twisting and swirling forms of shells,” explains principle designer, Alex McDiarmid. “In particular the Turitella shell (tower screw), a long twirled seashell, and the Tibia Fusus sea shell, for its long thin tail and of course Conches.”

The steel hull and aluminium superstructure offers accommodation to 16 guests across two VIP suites, each with its own private exterior balcony, three double suites and a single twin suite. The master suite includes an owner’s salon, an exterior balcony and private exterior deck area.

The design of the windows in the hull and aft of the superstructure is based on the aperture of a shell, allowing as much natural light into the superyacht as possible, “giving a floating atrium effect,” says McDiarmid. “The vibrant and striking colours of many shells influenced the over the top, multi-coloured paint scheme. It is a concept that would require new ways in thinking for production but concept designs should offer an insight into what could be, while at the same time entertain the viewer.” The team was very keen to ensure that at least one of the four options presented had a classic bow, while pushing the boundaries with the styling of the remaining concepts.

Other features of the designs include a helicopter, custom tenders that match the exterior styling of the yacht, waverunners, sea scooters, windsurfers, kayaks, waterskis, wakeboards and a range of scuba and fishing gear.

Two MTU 20V 400 M73L engines producing 3,600 kW will drive the Conch, achieving a maximum speed of 18 knots and a range of 6,900 nm at 14 knots. An alternative propulsion system would be a hybrid diesel electric system with pod drives, electric Voith Inline Propulsors/thrusters.
