Damen acquisition will grow repair muscle in Rotterdam

Looking to bolster its ship repair and conversion services in the Port of Rotterdam, the Damen Shipyards Group announced an agreement with Singapore’s Keppel Offshore & Marine to acquire the Keppel Verolme shipyard in the Rotterdam Botlek area. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of second quarter of this year.

Already with more than 50 companies involved in shipbuilding, repair and design, Damen will now strengthen its repair and conversion activities within the regional ship repair and conversion market. The Verolme yard has been active in the Botlek area of the Port of Rotterdam for more than 50 years and has three graving docks, a quay capacity of over 1,800 meters and about 250 employees.

Its largest dock measures 90 x 405 meters—which is substantially larger than Damen’s 46 x 307 meter dock at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam. The Verolme dock will enable Damen to service some of the largest vessels and rigs. The semisubmersible crane vessel Saipem 7000 is currently being serviced at the Verolme yard. Damen says it intends to continue activities in the Botlek area with the current employees of the yard.

With the Verolme yard, Damen will have four large repair yards within close proximity of the Port of Rotterdam. The two yards in Rotterdam, along with Damen’s yards in Vlissingen and Amsterdam, will closely cooperate to maximize the use of each other’s expertise, further developing synergy advantages and jointly marketing their capacity, with the objective to offer more efficient and competitive services.
