OCEANLED SUPPLIES LIGHTING TO NEW POLAR VESSEL

OceanLED will supply its specialised underwater lights to a new DNV GL polar class research and expedition vessel that aims to help develop sustainable maritime solutions.

Working closely with the owners of the REV Ocean, Kjell Inge Røkke and Nina Jensen, OceanLED has created a functional lighting setup for what is the largest privately-owned ship of its kind in the world.

“We are honoured that REV Ocean has chosen OceanLED to be their underwater lighting partner,” said Charles Stuart, OceanLED MD.

DNV GL challenges

The project presented many challenges, such as achieving DNV GL’s pressure test requirements with OceanLED’s underwater lights exceeding 28BAR / 286 mH2O (meters of water) and reaching 40BAR / 408 mH2O with the potential to go further.

Due for launch in 2020, the REV Ocean is being built by VARD and will assemble international research communities in a joint effort to acquire more knowledge, create more awareness and develop new and sustainable maritime solutions.

The ship will feature eco-friendly diesel electric propulsion with an additional 3MW lithium ion battery pack.

As part of the REV Ocean project, Kjell and Nina also plan to build a ‘World Ocean HQ’ to bring together researchers, voluntary organisations, businesses and marine environments, who together will work to find solutions to save lives in the ocean.

In addition to this, a ‘World Ocean Data Platform’ will seek to gather all available information about the sea in a digital platform
