Miami-area marina gets private new docks and drystack

The first phase of the Regatta Harbour project at Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove, Fla., has been completed, and the second phase is ramping up, according to the South Florida Business Journal.

The publication reported that the Treo Group completed three piers and a drystack for about 400 boats. The cost was estimated at about $5.5 million. Developer Otto Boudet-Murias said the new structure allow them to redevelop the old boat storage area and build the commercial component of Regatta Harbour.

“The city of Miami is getting a state-of-the-art marina with dry racks,” said Eduardo Garcia, a principal with Treo Group.

Boudet-Murias said there is a waiting list for slips. A 253-space parking garage at Regatta Harbour is under construction. The second phase, which includes 100,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, could be completed by the first quarter of 2020. The developer leased the 9.5-acre site from the city of Miami.

Other parts of Dinner Key are still recovering from Hurricane Irma, which tore much of the area in 2017. Miami Today News reports that a “major capital improvement project” is poised to rebuild the marina. The paper said that city officials are evaluating restoration plans that were submitted last year.

Maria Busto, interim marinas manager at Dinner Key Marina, said that before Irma, the marina was the largest wet-slip facility in Florida. “I can tell you that we currently have about 335 slips occupied and 77 moorings occupied, as well,” Busto told the paper.

The city reported that about 60 percent of the docks were destroyed after Hurricane Irma struck Coconut Grove on Sept. 10, 2017. “A peak storm surge hit Dinner Key at 9:51 p.m.,” read the request for proposals to reconstruct the marina. “The hurricane submerged the docks and portions of the adjacent waterfront, subjecting the area to waves, along with the high winds and heavy rainfall.”

Several marina occupants wrote in the comments section that they do not expect the marina to be repaired for at least two more years as the city decides on bids.
