OXE, the other diesel outboard

As the marine industry waits for Cox diesel outboards to be made available for testing, Sweden-based OXE has been powering boats for commercial with its own diesel outboards for the last two years.

The inline 4-cylinder powerhead displaces 2 liters and has an intercooled turbocharger. It’s available in 125-, 150, 175- and 200-hp ratings; shaft lengths of 25 and 30 inches; and gear ratios of 1.73-to-1 and 2.17-to-1.

The engine weighs 772 pounds and has a closed-cooling circuit to prevent corrosion. Alternator output is 130 amps. Steering is electronic power assist, and shifting in and out of gear is through a CANbus electro-hydraulic system and hydraulic clutch.

Instead of shafts that run from the powerhead to the lower unit, OXE motors use a primary drive belt that lets the user switch the orientation of the belt to change between the two available gear ratios. A second belt transfers power to the prop shaft.

The engines meet EPA, EU and CARB emissions requirements, and are certified by IMO Tier II, EPA Tier III and RCD.
