Worldwide WiFi becomes a reality

A while ago, we wrote an article about satellite phones, and the available options for marine usage. Now, Iridium has taken satellite communications to the next level with the new Iridium GO!.

Iridium GO! is a portable device that enables worldwide voice and data communication for your smart phone, tablet or laptop. It’s like global WiFi! Using its grid of 66 active satellites that are in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the device connects to the satellite system to create a WiFi hotspot within a 30.5-meter radius. You can then connect up to five mobile devices to use the internet, make calls or send text messages as you would with traditional WiFi. The device is absolutely ideal for boaters and marine rescue workers.

Of course, nothing can ever be perfect, and the Iridium GO! is no exception. The connection speed might give you flashbacks to the era of dial up. However, Iridium is working on its NEXT satellite constellation, which will increase the speed.

The Iridum GO! will be available in the coming months, and though the price point has not yet been announced, Iridium has stated that it will remain more affordable than their satellite telephones.
