MIX IT UP WITH BIOBUTANOL

BRP-Evinrude presents their next-generation biofuel

Conducting motorsports and supporting sustainability at the same time seems to be a contradiction in itself. A trial to make it more compatible was presented during test rides at the Miami International Boat Show. Using biobutanol as an additive to gasoline is the solution Evinrude, brand of Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), suggests.

The biofuel is generated from biomass, just like Ethanol which is already a common additive to outboard gasoline as a 10 % blend (E10) or a 15 % percent blend (E15). But the use of an Ethanol mix in recreational marine engines has encountered several problems – and another biofuel solution needed to be found. During an industry wide research phase over the last four years, marine companies and organizations such as BRP, Indmar, Volvo Penta, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) have been working on the launch of the next-generation biofuel.

The result: A fuel-mix with up to 16.1 % biobutanol does no harm to two or four stroke watersport engines. It will still take a while until this new fuel type will be commercially available on the market. In the meantime, motorboat owners can be happy that the new bio-mix does not require a costly new acquisition – only some patience.
