ROLLS-ROYCE TO TEAM UP WITH ISLAND OFFSHORE FOR A SHIP

A highly resistant and groundbreaking ship by Rolls Royce

If you found out that Rolls-Royce was about to take part in the construction of a ship, you would probably think the project would be a superyacht or at least something luxurious. You would be wrong. It turns out the English automaker has been a pioneer in oil and gas exploration for the past 40 years. So it’s actually not a surprise that they just won an order to provide integrated design and ship equipment for the new vessel of the Norwegian ship owner Islan Offshore.

According to Rolls-Royce, the new UT 777 will not be like anything we’ve seen before. The company focused on creating a highly resistant ship with a wide range of subsea task. Designed for top hole drilling, the ship will also be able to perform subsea inspection, maintenance and repair and other intervention work. It should not only be able to face up to any kind of mean weather, but it is also ice-classed. Rolls-Royce’s implication doesn’t limit itself to design and engineering. The automaker will also supply the major systems, including the propulsion system with six generator sets and seven electrically run thrusters, control and automation systems, mooring and anchoring deck machinery and electric systems.

Japanese constructors Kawasaki Heavy Industries will take care of the building for a delivery that is scheduled in 2017.
