ILLUSTRIOUS NEW LIFE FOR THE ROYAL NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIER HMS

A former war machine becomes a humanitarian vessel

As the UK Ministry of Defence announced the military ship would be kept after leaving service next year, proposals on what to do with it started coming. Among them, one from BMT Nigel Gee caught some attention. The naval architecture and design consultancy firm, along with Sigmund Yacht Design, proposed transforming this iconic war machine into a “Commonwealth Yacht” that could be used by the nations of the former British Empire to promote trade, attend international events and undertake humnitarian and disaster relief work all over the world. A radical change that needed to be highlighted by the general appearance of the vessel.

For that, three forms that are reminiscent of the sails of a clipper ship take over the deck and give the concept “a powerful outline for all to see as well as being elegant and very purposeful”. Its 23,000-ton capacity could contain a hospital, heavy-duty trucks and equipment that could be used in case of global disaster, according to the designers. We’ll see what the British government decides, but there is no doubt that the HMS Illustrious will give rise to some wild dreams until its future is decided!
