Barracuda has designed North Wind 100 sailing yacht to maximise space

When Spanish yacht builder North Wind tasked Barracuda Yacht Design with creating a contemporary new superyacht to expand upon its cruising range lineup, the firm delivered them a new 30.5 metre sailing yacht that maximises space on board.

The North Wind 100 is also designed for Mediterranean living with an enormous cockpit lounge and will look good in any harbour thanks to a curvaceous deck saloon exterior profile.

“The net result is a contemporary looking, deck saloon design of attractive proportions with large ‘Mediterranean-style’ cockpit,” says Inigo Toledo of Barracuda Yacht Design.

According to Toledo, North Wind was inspired by 32 metre superyacht Akalam, designed by Barracuda and launched by Pendennis in 2011. “Borrowing from the success of Akalam, we have once again maximised the external space by working from already generous beam proportions we have positioned the cockpit coamings as far out as reasonably possible.”

The designers then further took advantage of external space by creating a spacious aft exterior cockpit-cum-lounge area, “where the Mediterranean lifestyle can be fully appreciated,” according to Barracuda. The cockpit is divided symmetrically and hosts two steering positions, which are discreet as to not upset the lounge and lifestyle mood.

Another space saver is the hydraulically operated “transformer” platform, which does quadruple duty, serving as a traditional passerelle, then adjusts to boarding steps, a swim platform and can also be a tender and equipment lift.

Notable for a yacht of her size, the North Wind 100 by Barracuda Yacht Design has three double guest cabins in addition to her five metre long master stateroom. The master suite is grand for a 30 metre sailing yacht, with two double bathrooms, private access to the transom and views of the water that can be enjoyed even lying on the bed, thanks to the large, square portholes – of which there are no less than seven along the hull.

In the main living area, the saloon and dining are on one level for ease of flow. Beyond being designed for comfortable living, this yacht will be a solid sailing machine. She will boast a fully carbon, self-tacking cutter rig that’s easy to handle. There is also an internal steering area and navigation station.
