GREEN SAILING PRESENTS THE LOW-EMISSION CRUISE SHIP OF THE FUTURE

Could innovative metal "sails" improve fuel efficiency?

A revolution in the cruise ship sector? The plan to improve energy efficiency of cruise ships and to implement sustainability is not new. However, the idea to use metal “sails” is striking! Green Sailing is an innovative young enterprise founded in Hamburg, Germany, with plans to build high-tech cruise ships to cater to a demanding niche market – sustainable luxury cruises off the beaten tracks. On-board energy efficiency will be increased by 50 percent: the rotating metal cylinders (developed by design studio Innoven and based on the Magnus effect) can use headwinds to move forward. The use of renewable energy is supposed to support the main generator. And heavy crude oil will be renounced.

With its 150-meter length able to accommodate 350 passengers, the futuristic ship would operate in the category of a small luxury cruiser. Green Sailing plans a high quality concept with a unique interior decor, exotic destinations and outstanding service. But the overall unique selling point (USP) is meant to be sustainability: organic food and beverage delivered through sustainable logistics is just one part of the green sailing experience. Though the construction of the first ship has not yet begun, destinations and routes are already planned in detail and can be previewed on the company’s website. Antarctica and South Africa are just examples of the promising schedule.
