WÄRTSILÄ 31 IS THE WORLD’S MOST EFFICIENT FOUR STROKE DIESEL ENGINE

Guinness World Records title for the maritime power pack

Watching the product video of the new four stroke engine Wärtsilä 31 raises expectations: a heavily loaded containership is pulled by nothing more than a tiny tug boat equipped with the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine. And the title is official: the revolutionary engine from Finnish company Wärtsilä, global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets, achieved a Guinness World Record in May 2015.

The Wärtsilä 31 (named due to its 31 cm cylinder bore) consumes only 165g/kWh in the diesel version. Apart from diesel, other fuels such as dual-fual (DF) and spark-ignited gas (SG) bring the engine alive. The flexibility to use different types of fuel – from heavy diesel to different types of gas – allows for usage in a wide field of different ship types that operate with a main engine propulsion from 4.2 to 9.8 MW. Offshore vessels, ferries, cruise ships, small to medium tankers, bulk carriers and (we already know the answer from the video) container vessels are future application areas for the brand new Finnish power pack.

Besides fuel efficiency, the Wärtsilä 31 scores with reduced maintenance costs. After 8000 running hours the first inspection is due – incomparable among comparable products. With its combination of lowering fuel expenses while maintaining high environmental standards, this new medium speed engine might convince the maritime industry.
