MANUFACTURER SPOTLIGHT: MERCURY MARINE

The marine engine mogul celebrates its 75th year!

On January 22nd, 2014, the marine engine manufacturer Mercury Marine celebrated its 75th anniversary! That’s an impressive 75 years of industry-changing technologies.

Founded in 1939 by engineer Carl Kiekhaefer, Mercury Marine began when Kiekhaefer purchased a bankrupt engine manufacturing plant. As part of the estate, he inherited 300 defective outboard motors. He entirely rebuilt the engines, and the robust improvements absolutely demolished the competition. The engines sold immediately.

In that first year, the company developed the first full-feathered automatically stable steering, the first one-piece drive shaft, first streamlined engine cowlings, first vacuum exhaust system and the first external reed valves with T-shaped manifolds – and the innovations have not stopped.

For its 75th anniversary, Mercury Marine made a timeline of the major benchmarks of the company which is visible via their website. They will be celebrating their 75 years throughout 2014, so stay tuned! The celebration is just beginning.
