A 488 METER SHIP FROM SHELL

'Prelude' takes the title for the world's largest ship

Shell’s ‘Prelude’ takes the title of world’s biggest floating vessel, but she will also be the first ocean-based LNG plant. Her 488 meter hull would fit four football fields on her deck! In fact, if stood on end, the ship would be taller than the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.

However, Prelude has no propulsion system. The vessel will be towed to Broome in Western Australia and moored to Shell’s LNG drilling operation, which is roughly 300 nautical miles offshore. Prelude will take in the natural gas equivalent of 110,000 barrels of oil per day and will cool it into liquefied natural gas for transport and sale in Asia. The mooring system consists of four sets of mooring cables attached to a central tower which allows her to weathervane in the wind and therefore resist a Cat 5 Typhoon. Impressive!
