Vendée Globe 2024: What Is the LibertyKite that equips two-thirds of the boats?
Full-scale test off the coast of Les Sables-d'Olonne for the LibertyKite, a traction kite that will equip 22 of the 40 IMOCA in the Vendée Globe. A small sail that can be a great help in the event of a major failure.
The Libertykite: A safety innovation for the Vendée Globe 2024
The Libertykite was conceived by former skipper Yves Parlier. In this 10th edition of the Vendée Globe 2024, 22 out of 40 skippers will have this traction sail on board. It serves as an additional safety measure, as in the event of dismasting, the Libertykite can tow the boat.
"The self-stable LibertyKite is the result of 10 years of research and development by navigator Yves Parlier's team. This wing was initially designed to ensure the safety of sailors, whether they are sailing or using motor power," explains the manufacturer. It is described as a "complementary means of propulsion, useful in case of damage," allowing navigation while also making the boat more visible to rescuers. The sail was tested in the Bay of Les Sables-d'Olonne.
As easy as child’s play
It's as simple as a child’s game—one just needs the right technique. In just a few minutes, the Libertykite can be deployed and help bring the boat safely back to port. Since the 2020 edition of the Vendée Globe, all skippers who wish to do so have been able to bring this emergency sail on board. While only 10 skippers used it four years ago, this year, more than half of the Vendée Globe fleet has chosen to take it along.
"When you dismast, you're in the middle of the ocean, and you have to manage everything on your own. This 20m² kite can be deployed solo," explains Rémi Harlé from Beyond the Sea. "It might take a little longer if you're alone. You may need to engage the autopilot because you can’t be at the helm while also handling the sail. But sailors know how to manage."
Among the 22 competitors who have opted for this safety feature is Louis Duc. In his IMOCA, the Libertykite is within easy reach. The Norman sailor has already had to use it a few years ago during an Atlantic crossing.
"When you dismast at sea, it’s a serious situation, difficult to accept. But being able to quickly get the boat moving again on a course and at a good speed is a morale booster. It won’t prevent the need for major repairs later, but at least it allows the boat to remain operational and visible to other vessels nearby."
This emergency sail, weighing just over a kilogram, is an additional safety tool for Vendée Globe sailors.
"Accidents in the past—just like in motorsports, in Formula 1—have led to significant safety improvements. Experience has helped us develop much stricter rules regarding boat stability, capsizing, and more," explains Yannick Bestaven, winner of the last Vendée Globe. "All of this ensures that when we arrive in Les Sables-d’Olonne, we know our boats well, we’ve sailed them extensively, and they are reliable and ready."
The 40 skippers of the Vendée Globe 2024 will set sail on November 10th to embark on this solo round-the-world race.
