Dutch Thrustleader Alternative propulsion solution

Hybrid, diesel – battery electric thruster propulsion solution

For vessels with operational conditions that suit a fully electric concept, but where only a battery power source is too expensive or too heavy, you can use the diesel-battery electric solution. This power system architecture enables you to downsize your generators, reduce fuel consumption and install a system that is easier to optimize for the vessel’s particular type of operation. It also reduces noise. Think of sailing in urban areas.

Dutch Thrustleader Marine Propulsion can design, build and test a diesel battery-electric thruster propulsion solution. We do this in-house and together with experienced business partners.

From the TLAT600 azimuth thruster propeller to an electric motor, converter, DTLP-CAT-001 thruster control system, batteries, switchboard to a diesel generator, will be factory acceptance tested to work together. “The aim is to have a plug and play system that is easier to install and operates better than a system that comes from different suppliers.”

In the heart of a DTLMP diesel-electric thruster propulsion system you can find;

- The thruster system central control box: gives a complete thruster and power management control. Thanks to the development of this reliable

central control box, the system is properly coordinated with protective and operating devices to combine

safety, simple maintenance and high availability.

- With Sailing modes: The DTLP-CAT-001 control system also has built-in automated sailing modes for optimal performance.

Such as Multi power mode and Eco Silent Mode.

- And performance control: batteries can easily compensate for any peak load. But they must be kept at a good charge level. On a

vessel where the big consumers, such as azimuth thrusters, bow thrusters and winches, can consume peak

loads, power management is essential.

The electronic energy and power management system (EPMS) is able to switch on time slots or partial power limitations of the largest consumers as part of the dynamic overall energy consumption. For example, reducing the power consumption of air-conditioning in case of high demand for acceleration or navigation purposes. The DTLP-CAT-001 control system provides interfaces to the EPMS and smart automation to help the automated decision making. For example, select the right available power source to charge the batteries, at intervals.

Advantages for a Dutch Thrustleader TLAT600, Hybrid, diesel-battery-electric thruster propulsion solution

1. Economy: for some load conditions it is more convenient to use the electric motor

2. Comfort: reduction of noise and fewer vibrations

3. Maneuverability: complete speed range (0-max) on the propeller shaft

4. Save time: maintenance of diesel engine is made during navigation (without stopping the vessel

5. Flexibility in space: for example, use more batteries and install a smaller generator

6. Proven and tested: the complete system will be Factory Tested on all functions before delivery. This means that after installation

onboard there are only minor adjustments to make during commissioning.

7. Flexibility for the power source: The move to increased electrification is the future power solution for marine activity. Electrification results in a

smoother passage, saving fuel and vast sums of operational costs for a vessel’s owner. It gives the opportunity to

add more features to cruise ships and improve defense systems in naval fleets thanks to the additional electric

power onboard. It reduces noise in urban areas. The list of advantages seems endless.

8. Costs: These systems have an up-front cost, but are surprisingly cost-effective and offer customers fuel savings.

For vessels that are traveling only short distances, the flexibility of the DC-Hub enables all-electric operation. This makes it possible to remove the diesel engine. With the DC-Hub, users can plug into any new energy source. The system also requires less volume and weight than a conventional AC system. The result is superior reliability and the flexibility to run on any future power source. We call this future flexibility.
