Ballast Water Treatment Systems

The Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) came into force in September 2017.

Ballast Water Management

The regulation requires all vessels trading in international waters to manage their ballast water according to ship-specific ballast water management plans. In addition, the BWMC calls for the installation or retrofit of a Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS), a technical measure which filters and/or neutralizes living organisms in the ballast tanks. The application of a BWTS may require a review of the ballast pump specifications. Based on our experience, MarFlex believes it can provide ship owners and managers with a number of different solutions for their vessels.

Newbuilding

Retrofit

When a new BWTS is fitted on-board, MarFlex can, based on the characteristics of the BWTS:

Update the MarFlex ballast pump settings to comply with new working condition(s).

Upgrade the MarFlex ballast pump(s) and/or MarFlex electrical system to meet any increased pressure, capacity and/or automation demands.

Deliver new MarFlex ballast pump(s) with a drive system to vessels without a MarFlex pump system.

Based on our latest completed modifications with BWTS upgrades, we have seen that small modifications to the pump head in combination with a bigger electric motor are often sufficient to compensate for the pressure loss in the BWTS.

In addition to the mechanical modifications, we recommend the attendance of a commissioning engineer during the first ballasting operation with the new treatment system. The engineer is then able to fine tune the automation system and set the right parameters to ensure that you can optimally operate your BWTS during operations.
