A race against time, an extraordinary human experience, a record to beat ...

This summer, Bertrand Vialle and Anthony Steinberg will try to beat the Mediterranean crossing between Marseilles and Carthage with a sport catamaran.

This record is currently held by one of the great names in sailing: Yvan Bourgnon.

This exceptional sailor is a sport catamaran specialist with impressive palmares and records on this type of embarcation: European champion, 24h run record, cape Horn passage and solo round the world without instruments are for example part of his achievements.

Much more than a crossing, this challenge promises to be a formidable experience: Surpassing this exceptional skipper!

A specific catamaran: the Nacra F20 Carbon, a small Formula 1 of the seas

Connecting Marseilles to Sidi Bou Said (Tunisia) coastlines can only be done on board an exceptional boat : the Nacra F20 Carbon. At the cutting edge of technology, this boat is ideal for this kind of challenge.

Equipped with curved fins, it is already a reference with the 24h run record established by the same Yvan Bourgnon with 344 nautical miles covered at an average speed of 14.3 knots. Fast and very lightweight (160kg), it is especially robust and perfect for the extreme conditions that will be encountered during the crossing.

Sleepless in a rough sea: An acrobatic and high risk challenge

Many trials await our sailors :

Manage fatigue and sleep: Supervised by the sleep specialist François Duforez, Central Sleep and Vigilance of the Hotel-Dieu, Bertrand and Anthony will have to learn how to alternate REM sleep time and recovery to optimize their concentration.

A muscularly difficult position : The seat of the skippers is essential for good navigation but can generate painful consequences on the body. A good physical preparation and muscle relaxation by body posture researches will be required to remain fit.

Ensure the safety of the boat : The Mediterranean Sea is a very dangerous sea with one of the most important maritime traffic in the world. The difficult task of the security team will be to anticipate the frequent and rapid climatic changes that are so particular to the Mediterranean sea, while ensuring the visibility of the boat at night.

In summary :

Record to beat: 54 hours

455 nautical miles to cover

2.5 days without restful sleep

Maximum speeds: 25 knots
