Emocean 92 metre

Initially featured in Q3, Berkeley March, director and co-founder of Emocean Yacht Design, talks SYD through one of his latest projects, a 92-metre megayacht concept for Antwerp-based Flandria. Here we see the full set of visuals of her exterior, including the bar on the main deck and the owners suite.

Twenty years ago, Flandria developed a yacht concept of an 80-metre motoryacht called Flandria 2002 together with Bannenberg, Burgess, Tree Quays and P&O. This was to be the first full SOLAS-compliant megayacht. The project was never realised, but the idea to develop the yacht in such a way that it can be versatile in use is an innovation that is increasingly relevant today.

The yacht’s flexible layout means she can both accommodate a 20-guest charter as well as a 40-person mini cruise. This concept is carried throughout the vessel, from the accommodation deck where it can house VIP and guest cabins depending on the occasion, but also communal, relaxation and dining areas, as well as the crew and technical spaces.

The initiators of the project contacted us to transpose the whole yacht concept to a modern superyacht. This was not just a question of restyling, but a total rethink with regards to design, interior, toys and tenders, equipment, entertainment, etc. While working on the project, it became apparent to us that there really has been an evolution in what is expected of the yachting experience.

The result is a staggering design that is 12 metres longer then the original Bannenberg design. Ecological awareness and safety are key features of the yacht, as well as all the luxury and comfort required to entertain the different clientele profiles. The beach club with its large collection of water sport toys is a prime example of the areas that have been further developed. The striking exterior is another important development, as the yacht’s appearance has a direct effect on the experience. Developed in collaboration with March & White, we have drawn on their experience in designing high-end, luxury residences.

“In setting an interior style for the yacht we had to balance high quality, traditional and durable materials with contrasting modern elements to complement the cutting-edge nature of the exteriors”, explains Elliot March. “The gallery space is lined in teak panelling with bronze trim, providing an understated yet luxurious backdrop. We designed the bar as a modern insertion to reflect the angular forms of the exterior. Faced in white quartz, this bespoke feature is unique to the boat and forms the focus of the gallery.”

“Continuing the theme of understated luxury into the bedroom, we set out to provide a neutral backdrop to the 180-degree view, which becomes the focal point for the room”, continues James White. “Intelligent lighting systems coupled with bespoke bronze fittings help to create a 6-star luxury feel after dark. The blend of materials and design makes the yacht ideal for both chartering and cruising. The high-spec interior systems ensure the interior is fully adaptable to all events and seasons.”
