After 24 months under construction, Lürssen’s latest project has emerged from the Aumund facility in Germany, which specialises in the construction of the shipyard’s largest yachts. Having been designed by Espen Øino, there are a number of very interesting design elements on the cubic-looking vessel, including a vast central window which stretches over three decks.

With a name that derives from a mythical God in Asian culture, as ever, the standards have been set high from the project’s signing and, from what we’ve seen so far, things seem to be on track. The dark and particularly angular looking superyacht has a combination of both curved and sharp lines, adding variety to the vessel’s profile. Thunder also has glass panels, aft of each deck, which significantly enhances views while on board.

Although the yacht was captured during the technical launch in November 2015, the shipyard has managed to uphold the yacht’s confidentiality for the last three years. Still to this day, details of the yacht’s interior remain confidential. However, in a brief statement to the press, the shipyard has mentioned that the 120m superyacht will have “a traditionally styled interior, which will be installed in the coming months”.

Now at the end of Q1, already Lürssen has had a spectacular year, with the launch of 123m Project Jupiter, 74m Auriora and now 120m Project Thunder. Furthermore, the shipyard has already delivered 106m Amadea this year and plans to deliver a further four yachts in 2017, with a combined LOA of 559m. This year all but one of the yachts scheduled for delivery are well over 100m.

Project Thunder will now undergo an extensive period of sea trials prior to her delivery, which is currently scheduled for the end of 2018.
