Spirit yachts receives new order for 34m yacht

Spirit Yachts re-enter the superyacht market after 10 years with a new order…

Classic sailing-yacht builder Spirit Yachts has announced a new order from an overseas client for a classical 34m sailing yacht. The British sailing-yacht builder is now one of three shipyards building sailing yachts in the UK, in which there are four yachts currently under construction.

The 34m sailing yacht, named simply Spirit 111, is the largest yacht the Ipswich-based shipyard has built to date, and the second time it has built a yacht over 30m. The project also marks the first collaboration with yacht design agency Rhodes Young, which has developed the interiors of the yacht.

“We are delighted to be working with Rhodes Young on Spirit Yachts’ first collaboration with an external design agency,” says Spirit Yachts CEO Sean McMillan. “By maximising our combined expertise, we have created an aesthetically beautiful, lightweight yacht that will be easy to handle with minimal crew. The end result will be one of the largest, single-masted modern classic wooden yachts ever built in the UK.”

Director of Rhoades Young, Jonathan Rhoades, adds, “Spirit Yachts is renowned for its build quality and elegant design, and we’re looking forward to working alongside Sean and his team on what is set to be a ground-breaking new project.”

Having been designed by McMillan, the yacht has a stunning classical appearance. However, the yacht is equipped with a state-of-the-art eco-friendly system, which includes an electric drive system, supported by four lithium battery banks, which power the yacht for modest distances or when manoeuvring.

According to the shipyard, “green credentials have been considered throughout the yacht’s systems”, having been designed to consume the lowest amount of power possible.

As explored in The Superyacht Annual Report 2017, the sailing-yacht market’s rather difficult period does show signs of steady increasing activity. This year, The Superyacht Intelligence Agency predict that the sailing-yacht fleet will increase by 18 yachts to 993.
