Assina

Featured in SYD Q18, the 135m Assina concept is the latest design to come from Roland Friedberger of RF Yachts. One of the main benefits of a multihull vessel is its superior width, and this trimaran is no different with a beam of 28m. Here the German designer explains the thinking behind the concept, as he prepares for the delivery of a 70m refit project due in June 2014.

The idea behind this design was to create something truly different from anything currently on the market. It was important that the design not only grabs people’s attention for its sheer size and style but also because it is something that could be realistically built.

I wanted the vessel to have as wide a beam as possible in order to provide plenty of options for the interior layout. One of the most impressive aspects of the design is its nearly 700sqm main salon aft on the main deck, which can host 300 to 400 guests for dinner, a party or presentation. This space offers a 270-degree panoramic view out to sea thanks to floor- to-ceiling windows. This space overlooks a sunbathing platform below, which can be accessed directly from the salon.

With such a high number of potential guests, it was key that the galley be large enough to wine and dine such an audience. We have created a variety of layouts, one of which provides the crew with plenty of space in order to be able to handle regular large dining and entertainment requirements. Between 30 and 36 guests can stay on board in guest suites of 40sqm (a double en suite) or 60sqm (a VIP en suite). The owner’s suite, however, is part of the owner’s deck and includes 250sqm of space.

Above the main salon is an 84sqm round pool, which takes pride and place aft of the sundeck. On either side of the pool is a raised circular seating platform that balances on the edge of the deck. This area provides a clear view down the side of the vessel, as part of it hangs above the sea. The sundeck includes a large hardtop roof structure with carefully designed gaps that allow sunlight through. However, should this space require full sun protection, the gaps can be covered thanks to sunshades that can be deployed automatically.

Forward of the main deck is a large open entertainment space that includes two Jacuzzis and a seating area that can be converted into two tennis courts should the owner wish. The yacht would not be complete without the inclusion of a helipad platform, which we have positioned towards the bow. Other features of the layout include a gym, casino and cinema.

The lower deck is home to crew quarters, a wellness spa, diving compartment and a drive-in tender. This James Bond-style garage is accessed via submerged doors in the central hull, which help to stabilise the bay when flooded. When not in use this space can be used as another swimming area or for the launch and retrieval of a submarine. The tender garage is able to house two 12m tenders, while fold-down balconies on either side of the lower deck bring guests closer to the sea.
