Rauma Marine Constructions gets LOI for hybrid car passenger ferry

Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has signed a letter of intent covering design and construction of a EUR 120 million (about $138 million) car passenger ferry that will operate between the Finnish city of Vaasa and the Swedish city of Umeå. It has been commissioned by operator Kvarken Link, which is owned by the two cities, both of which will serve as guarantors of the financing.

Accommodating some 800 passengers and with a freight capacity of 1,500 lane meters for trucks, the environmentally friendly ferry will have a hybrid propulsion solution combining dual fuel (LNG/biogas and diesel/SCR) machinery and batteries, connected to azimuth thrusters/pods.

The ferry is being built to Ice Class 1A Super.

The formal construction agreement is to be signed in early 2019, with the design and construction work set to start immediately thereafter, says Jyrki Heinimaa, CEO of RMC. Kvarken Link says delivery will take place by April 30, 2021.

”RMC won the public international tender thanks to our expert knowledge and technology. RMC specializes in the design and construction of car and passenger ferries," says Jyrki Heinimaa. "We are therefore both pleased and proud to have showcased our competence in this area. We are also very grateful for the confidence that the customer has shown in RMC, having commissioned this ferry from us.”

Rauma Marine Constructions, which operates from Rauma Shipyard, has seen rapid growth. Last fall it signed letters of intent for a new ferry for Tallink to operate the Helsinki-Tallinn route, and four combat vessels, as part of the Squadron2020 project. In addition, RMC is also currently building blocks for a cruise ship under construction at the Turku Shipyard.
