Mitsubishi Shipbuilding christens next-gen LNG carrier

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Nagasaki, Japan, Shipyard & Machinery Works yesterday held a christening ceremony for a next-generation LNG carrier that will serve the Freeport, Texas, LNG project.

Named Bushu Maru, the vessel is under construction for Trans Pacific Shipping 6 Limited, a joint venture of Jera Co., Inc. and NYK Line. Delivery is set for next month.

The new ship is the latest model “Sayaringo STaGE” type , featuring significant improvements in both LNG carrying capacity and fuel performance thanks to the adoption of a more efficient hull structure and an innovative hybrid propulsion system.

The Bushu Maru has a length of 297.5 m, width of 48.94 m, and depth of 27.0 m, with a draft of 11.5 m. Deadweight tonnage is approximately 80,300 tons, with a total cargo tank capacity of 180,000 cu.m.

The Sayaringo STaGE has a refined MOSS-type LNG containment system, with apple-shaped rather than cylindrical tanks providing greater LNG carrying capacity without increasing the ship’s width.

The STaGE, (Steam Turbine and Gas Engines) hybrid propulsion system combines a steam turbine and gas-fueled engines. Effective utilization of waste heat from the engines by the steam turbine provides a substantial improvement in plant efficiency, allowing for high-efficiency navigation at both low and high-speeds.
