Scorpio Tankers orders fresh batch of scrubbers

Scorpio Tankers has ordered a further 14 ENVI-Marine emission control systems from Pacific Green Technologies, a strategic joint venture with PowerChina SPEM, a unit of China’s largest engineering, procurement, and construction firm and a supplier of emission technology to Chinese power stations

The Scorpio Tanker scrubber order is worth a reported US$20.3M and is in addition to 52 systems already ordered by Scorpio Tankers, as announced in December 2018.

The ENVI-Marine scrubbers ordered by Scorpio Tankers are a hybrid-ready design, which allows them to be upgraded to a closed loop configuration at a future date. The scrubber is said to use no moving parts but relies on a patented TurboHead technology design that quenches the exhaust gases before frothing the gases through seawater to release the harmful gas elements.

Pacific Green Technologies executive director Scott Poulter said "This is a further vote of confidence in Pacific Green’s Technologies and our ability to build marine scrubbers on time and on budget. Scorpio Tankers has invested in the latest generation of fuel-efficient vessels and the hybrid-ready ENVI-Marine system will give the company the return-on-investment and flexibility it needs to face the complexities of IMO 2020."

"We are one of the few marine scrubbing companies with the scale to fulfil major orders. We now have an orderbook in excess of US$200M and the technical know-how, the people and the facilities to manufacture our systems on a large scale," added Mr Poulter.

Scorpio Tankers’ sister company, Scorpio Bulkers, has confirmed it has ordered a further nine ENVI-Marine scrubbers at a combined cost of US$13M. The order is on top of the 28 scrubbers ordered by Scorpio Bulkers in December 2018.
