DNV GL APPROVAL FOR TRANSFLUID GREEN POWER

Transfluid has obtained two DNV GL Type approvals - for its marine parallel hybrid modules and LiFePO4 battery banks.

The battery type-approval also includes the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) extension which is a stricter list of requirements. The absence of carbon and graphite avoids profoundly destructive ‘thermal runaway’ which is one of the most extensive tests required to obtain DNV GL and NMA approvals.

The parallel hybrid technology allows redundancy on board. Propulsion comes from either the internal combustion engine (ICE) or through an electric motor. Should an electrical blackout occur, the ICE is capable of operating the propulsion system and in the event of ICE failure, the electric motor serves as a second means of power.

Electric motor power

The parallel technology can also deliver ‘boost mode’ mode for short bursts, adding the electric motor power to the ICE power and achieving increased responsiveness under varying conditions.

The electric machine is both the motor and generator, allowing fast battery charging during ICE operation, alleviating the need for shore recharging infrastructures which is the most significant barrier towards a fully electric solution.

The combination of Transfluid’s hybrid transmission and batteries in a plug and play supply delivers what is said to be one of the safest and most reliable ‘green propulsion’ solution and is available in both new build or as a retrofit option.
