ICON YACHTS launches project Ragnar

The 70m explorer vessel is the result of a two-year conversion at the Dutch yard…

ICON YACHTS shipyard has launched their latest conversion, which sees the former ice breaking support vessel Sanaborg transformed into an explorer superyacht. The new superyacht conversion is currently known as ‘Project Ragnar’.

The 70m vessel is 2,450 GT and was originally built as an ice breaking multi-purpose support supply vessel in Holland in 2012, but, since entering the ICON shed in July 2017, has now become an Arctic explorer superyacht able to accommodate up to 16 people.

Emerging from her shed, Ragnar showcased a masculine exterior design profile that was penned by the renowned British design firm RWD. Ragnar now combines the capabilities of a polar explorer vessel with the requisite comfort and luxury of a superyacht, complete with a certified ICE Class A1 super hull.

The design, according to a shipyard representative, has been inspired by “medieval war craftsmanship, combined with modern sleek lines and British heritage”. She is a LY3-classed vessel, and is capable of ice breaking due to ICE class PC5-rated electric driven ice pods, while offering a range of 6,000 nautical miles, enabling those on board to explore remote areas of the planet.

The two-year conversion includes the addition of luxury accommodation areas, a designated deck for toys, and fully-certified helicopter landing pad. Onboard, guests will find toys ranging from a Luxury Ripsaw EV2, Helicopter EC145, two 8m tenders, two 6m ribs, to a two-person explorer submarine, two jet skis, two laser sailing boats, and a RIB Castoldi 26.

In addition to the outdoor activities mentioned above, the yacht hosts a floating beach with a retractable gangway, reminding charterers that this vessel is not solely tied to the cold arctic waters. Ragnar also boasts a massage room, sauna, gym, ice pool, and snow room.
