Garmin adds solar charging to its marine series smartwatch

Debuting earlier this year, the Garmin quatix 6 series was remarkable for the addition of a wealth of specialized boating features to the company’s flagship fēnix series of watches.

Now, add solar power to the mix.

The latest in the company’s GPS smartwatch series — the quatix 6X Solar — features a transparent solar charging display that uses the sun to extend battery life

As Garmin’s first marine-centric GPS smartwatch to offer solar charging, the quatix 6X Solar combines features of Garmin’s fēnix 6X Pro Solar with boating, fishing, cruising and sailing capabilities.

It can connect to onboard electronics, and record data from chartplotters to offer autopilot control, data streaming for speed, depth, temperature and wind. The watch also acts as a controller for Fusion entertainment systems, and supports BlueChart g3 coastal charts and LakeVü inland maps.

It also includes built-in activity profiles and performance metrics for paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, skiing and golf.

Battery performance on the quatix 6X Solar is impressive — is up to 21 days in smartwatch mode, and up to 24 days with solar charging.

With a new feature that manages power, users can see and control how various settings and sensors impact performance, and adjust their battery saving modes to extend battery life.

“We’re excited to introduce solar charging into the new quatix 6 series, giving users everything they've come to know and love from this sophisticated and connected marine smartwatch series, now with even longer battery life performance,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales, in a statement. “Because of its unique power-replenishing technology, the quatix 6X Solar gives mariners more on-wrist time to enjoy their favorite activities both on the water and on land.”

MSRP on the quatix 6X Solar is $1149.99.
