Supplier update: Bright future for lighting specialist Totallux post-lockdown

As soon as the sun goes down, the innovative LED interior and exterior lighting solutions by Totallux are transforming yachts into works of art on the water.

Since setting up the company in 2003, Totallux has been lighting up new-build and refit superyachts and tenders all over the world, gaining recognition for its revolutionary designs.

After learning that the company founder, Jan Mark Zumpolle, has had a life-long affair with the yachting industry, SuperYacht Times found out from the man himself how he ensures Totallux lights outshine the rest.

What is so special about Totallux as a company and its products?

First and foremost, we are really passionate about the superyacht industry. When we take on a big project, we have the opportunity to think outside of the box and come up with tailored solutions that use the most modern developments in lighting technology.

There is always a challenge to find the best solutions in the early stages of a project, as so much is possible with LED lights, but generating these ideas and getting the most out of this technology through close cooperation with multiple parties – like the shipyards, installers and designers – is what we enjoy doing the most.

In the early stages of these major projects, we can advise across all areas, due to our wealth of expertise and technical knowledge. We are able to anticipate the wishes of our clients and are always looking for the best solution.

We are very proud of our TLX LED Flexline range which is the ultimate product for customised lighting solutions. Because it is made with small LEDs with a smooth and flat exterior, it is very flexible and can be manipulated to create visually-appealing illuminated shapes and sculptures. A recent update to our TLX LED Flexlines was that the cutting lengths were made shorter at only one centimetre, so it’s easier to fit in and can be created with less waste.

What is unique about the company’s installation process?

With our HQ located in the Netherlands and with representatives in the Mediterranean, we are always able to visit our customers at a moment’s notice. This means that our customers can benefit from our technical expertise and knowledge straight away as advisors, enabling them to think ahead in the early stages - which is very important. We offer this service at no extra cost. Our advice can cover many specific elements, including LED light sizes, technical and hardware options, refit plans, controllers and protocols. We can also provide training to electrical installers for a more efficient process and always follow up on our advice by hand-checking the product quality, colour temperature and creating perfectly mocked-up samples.

What superyacht projects are you working on at the moment?

We were recently in Barcelona working on the refit of the third largest yacht in the world. Otherwise, we are continuing our work with some of the biggest Dutch shipyards such as Oceanco, Wajer Yachts, Royal Huisman and Damen Yachting/Amels and have been doing so for more than 15 years. The team here has always worked closely with shipyards, light designers and installers, and we never stop developing in response to their requests.

What are you looking forward to working on this year?

We recently opened a new base in southern Europe so we can better support our customers and present our products. There are also plans for Totallux to set up a cooperative in the US. Our preparations for our exhibition during this year’s METSTRADE Show are keeping us busy, as we are getting ready to present our latest developments and new products. We keep on investing in new developments, building on the knowledge and expertise of the Totallux team to support the marine industry to the best of our ability.

How does Totallux work towards being a sustainable company?

Of course, we are aware of the problems which the world faces and we are proud to do our fair share to help maintain a healthy ocean. We sponsor an ocean cleanup project and have changed our packaging and modes of transport to more sustainable options. In terms of our products, we are always looking for improvements such as a longer life span.
