SPIRIT LAUNCHES LARGEST MOTOR YACHT TO DATE

Following last month’s handover of the Spirit 111 sailing superyacht, Spirit Yachts has launched its largest modern classic motor yacht to date.

Custom-built to the owner’s specification, the 21.7m Spirit P70 has twin MAN i6 800hp engines allowing it to cruise 1,000nm at an average of 18 knots.

Spirit Yachts MD, Nigel Stuart said that the launch of the P70 represented a significant step forward for the Spirit Yachts power range. “Whilst the company’s core business remains sailing yachts, we are seeing increasing demand for larger motor yachts tailored to suit an owner’s cruising plans,” he said.

Classic Spirit design

The P70 echoes the design of Spirit’s existing motor yachts, combining in a larger model the flared bow and tumblehome stern of the P40 with the 1930s-style of its sailing yachts.

With sapele ring frames to which Douglas fir longitudinal strips are bonded, the P70 has diagonal layers of kaya wood planking, sanded and vacuum infused with epoxy resin. The lightweight construction method means that at 24 tonnes the P70 is almost half the weight of GRP counterparts.

Seatorque oil-filled BOSS shafts mounted to the hull structure using fittings designed to keep noise and maintenance to a minimum. On the top deck is a flybridge with two double Stidd helm seats and seating for six guests. A 750kg crane is included for a rib of up to 3.7m.

Below decks are a forward ensuite owner’s cabin complete with bath, an ensuite single cabin, open plan dining saloon and galley and a further two twin guest cabins which share a head and shower.
