First Look: Metal Shark completes 48m expedition catamaran Magnet

In the US, shipbuilder Metal Shark has completed its first 48-metre expedition catamaran named Magnet.

The aluminium build is the first Metal Shark M48 model in the yard’s new portfolio of private yachts, which will also include 30-metre and 70-metre versions.

As a well-known builder of aluminium and steel vessels for military and commercial use, Metal Shark will keep their design work in-house and optimise the catamaran hull form to offer high speeds and long-range cruising capabilities.

Not wanting a ‘typical yacht’, Magnet’s owner, George Wallner, explains his brief: “I wanted a serious, rugged, purpose-built vessel capable of reaching the remote, unspoiled destinations that you can’t get to with an airplane. With Magnet, I can travel quickly to faraway places, and everyone on board can enjoy the adventure. Upon arrival, we can stay for extended periods, independently and comfortably, without reliance on a large crew.”

He continues: “I also wanted to be able to work on board, continue with my product development and testing activities at sea. I worked closely with Metal Shark over an extended period to execute my vision, to create this tool for recreational exploration, and it is very rewarding to finally experience Magnet underway. So far, I have been most impressed by this vessel’s stability, even at speed in heavy seas.”

With the yacht said to be able to run from New York to Miami in under 48 hours, Magnet has the ability to cross oceans at 17 knots and reach a range of 11,000 nm at 10 knots. Powered by 12 solar panels and twin 2,600 bhp MTU IMO Tier III diesel engines, the new yacht has reached a top speed of 27 knots during trials.

“At anchor, a Metal Shark Yacht becomes its own island of self-sustaining independence, with the autonomy to stay on station for extended periods,” adds Metal Shark CEO Chris Allard.

From the outside, Magnet’s chiselled lines are inspired by military patrol vessels and incorporate angular brows to help shield the windows from the sun. These architectural elements along with her industrial-grade finish help to achieve the yard’s ambition to create a yacht that focuses on its capability, rather than “trying to reach new levels of haute couture interior design.”

At 290 GT, Magnet has space for 10 guests to be entertained and accommodated while at sea. Her tenders, toys and other onboard cargo benefits from the submersible stern platform and an aft deck crane. Additional facilities such as refrigerated storage, wine cellar and workshop can be found on the lower decks within the twin hulls, meaning that the guest areas can spread across the remaining three decks.

Decorated to mimic a high-end city apartment with large panoramic windows, the interior layout includes a sun deck with lounging and alfresco dining areas, a bar and an elevated forward flybridge. Magnet has been configured with a master, VIP and three staterooms, whereas the other models in the range have the option to be reconfigured to accommodate more guests if required.

“M48 and our broader line of Metal Shark Yachts defy simple categorisation,” adds Allard. “A Metal Shark Yacht offers a different type of experience by enabling owners to go farther, faster, without refuelling, by extending the amount of time they can operate autonomously, by reducing reliance on the crew, and by maximising the enjoyment of the yachting experience by minimising maintenance concerns.”
