JA Moody Provides Cryogenic Ball Valve to Marine Industry

With numerous locations across the country, JA Moody has been a marine supplier for more than 50 years. In doing so, the company offers a line of valves, including the A.E.V. cryogenic ball valve, to help keep companies in compliance while at sea.

The small, veteran-owned company says that as more and more ships look at dual-fueled LNG engines to cut back on emissions, the cryogenic ball valve aids in shutoff and zero leakage during thermal cycling.

“These and other figures will improve the overall performance of the LNG delivery system for all types of maritime vessels leading to a broader acceptance of converting vessels to dual-fuel systems,” says Rickey Koenig, technical sales, JA Moody.

A.E.V.’s cryogenic ball valve was designed from the ground up using modern technology incorporated in the valve to provide its users a safer option when choosing critical valves for their process. According to JA Moody, it is one of the first valves designed from the start using 3D CAD modeling, FCD analysis and that is able to incorporate manufacturing technologies, such as 5-axis machining. Prior to this design, the newest technology in the isolation valve industry was the triple offset valve that was developed in the 1960s, says the company.

The offset trunnion offers torque seating, which allows the valve to seal independently of process pressures. JA Moody says that the A.E.V. valve also offers a bi-directional shutoff without the need to vent any trapped cavities. The company says that this was previously achieved only by using triple offset butterfly valves. The new design eliminates the impediment of a shaft and disk in the flow stream.

Other key attributes of the cryogenic ball valve include:

Cavity risks eliminated

True torque seating without springs to energize seat

Leakage during thermal cycling is eliminated

Ultra low-emission packing system

Friction-free rotation eliminates wear

Robust fire safe certification

Moody Marine Service (established in 2003) is a sister company of JA Moody. In 2017, Moody Marine Service expanded into the West Coast in National City, Calif., with a 4,000-square-foot facility to supply its customers marine repair solutions.
