Fifteen years after introducing the Inboard Performance System, Volvo Penta announced that it has installed 30,000 units.

The Swedish engine manufacturer says IPS not only provides an alternative to prop-and-shaft propulsion, but the pod-drive system has also made boats more fuel efficient, quieter and cleaner. Volvo Penta said an IPS boat uses 30 percent less fuel and emits 30 percent less CO than a traditional prop-and-shaft inboard.

“Finding ways to reduce fuel consumption and emissions has been an objective of ours for many years and is as a priority across our product range,” Johan Inden, head of Volvo Penta’s marine segment, said in a statement. “We strive to continue to improve today’s innovative technology, while in parallel explore future possibilities toward significantly reduced or zero emissions.”
