New variable speed generator from Fischer Panda

Fischer Panda has launched its latest variable speed diesel generator aimed at the smaller commercial craft and survey vessels.

The 150i operates at between an optimum 1400 and 2600rpm to provide AC power as required on board which Fischer Panda explains, reduces operating costs compared to fixed speed generators.

“By freeing the engine to follow the AC load, on average 25% less fuel is required leading to much lower emissions, plus the engine is always correctly loaded so there is less wear and tear which is reflected in longer service intervals,” explained David Melville, sales manager, specialist applications at Fischer Panda UK.

The generator is capable of up to a nominal 120kW (150kVA) of sine wave power at 400v/50Hz three-phase while retaining sound levels at 55dB(A) at 7m and 70dB(A) at 1m.

“These are the minimum acoustic levels achieved with capsule options available for even more silent operation,” explained Mr Melville. With such low noise and negligible vibration, The Panda 150i is the perfect addition to any engine room.”

The generator is supplied with a digital remote control system for monitoring and programming of features such as auto-start where an external trigger from a battery voltage monitor, thermostat or remote ships system (PLC) can start the generator.

It also has a CAN-Bus NMEA 2000 or RS485 interface for data export to other on-board control systems and additional remote panels can be linked for larger installations.

“For higher loads, several Panda iSeries generators can be parallel connected, even if they have different output capacity,” said Mr Melville. “Linked by just a Fischer Panda data cable, the Panda 150i can be parallel connected to the Panda 45i, Panda 60i or another Panda 150i – dramatically increasing the flexibility of on-board power. Full load-sharing is achieved yet each generator can be fully operated individually.”

The system is water cooled allowing continuous duty without de-rating in hot areas such as engine rooms and a high start capability allows loads to be managed such as air-conditioning, water-makers and compressors.

The company also claims the generator is more than 600kgs lighter than other comparable generators, with 30% less volume.

“We believe this is a real milestone in generator innovation. Savings in weight and space are a valuable contribution to any vessel and parallel operation allows greater flexibility in layout for vessels and multi-hulls in particular,” added Barry Fower, Fischer Panda UK MD.
